NGI Working with NOAA to Improve Hurricane Forecasts
August 22, 2014National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) scientists and partners including the Northern Gulf Institute (NGI) have been launching a number of new unmanned aircraft and water vehicles this summer to collect weather information as part of a coordinated effort to improve hurricane forecasts.
Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AMOL) scientists and NGI are studying the use of unmanned underwater gliders to gather ocean information in the Gulf of Mexico. The Wave Gliders as they are called were launched out of Biloxi, MS this month. The gliders which float on the ocean surface, propelled by ocean waves, are equipped with sensors to measure air and water temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction and barometric pressure.
