GRI research assistant Amritanshu (Amrit) Thakur was awarded the Graduate Research Assistant of the Year for 2007-2008 by the MSU Graduate Student Association. In a recent memo to Dr. David Shaw, Director of GRI, Amit had the following to say:

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for nominating me for this award. I would also like to express my gratitude for a chance to be a Research Assistant here at the GRI. I appreciate my major professor Dr. Thomas Philip's consistent academic guidance and my mentor, Mr. Valentine Anantharaj's diligence in directing my research. I admire Dr. Lori Bruce's leadership that has fostered an inter-disciplinary academic and research atmosphere at GRI that is conducive for student research. I also appreciate Dr. Robert Moorhead for sponsoring my research here through the NASA RPC project (not to mention the opportunity to attend the Super Computing '07 conference which had a substantial impact on my academic pursuits and research). Lastly, I would make a note of Mr. Trey Breckenridge's encouragement for student participation at the Supercomputing Conference and his team's solid HPC support. As I prepare for a leadership role in a highly research and innovations driven R&D industry, I feel more confident in solving real-world problems using the professional and personal skills that I have acquired over the last couple of years. I hope to use them to contribute towards the betterment of the community as a whole. Once again, I thank you for everything and feel honored to have worked under your leadership.

This was not the first time Amrit received honors from MSU's Graduate Student Association. He placed second in the Annual Symposium in 2007 for his oral presentation of his research paper that focused on developing software architecture for data provenance.
