GRI Researcher Brings Climate Change Education to High Schools

Dr. Karen McNeal, Department of Geosciences assistant professor and GRI researcher, will be the primary investigator of a $2.5 million National Science Foundation grant which will help improve high school students'knowledge about climate change. The four-year, Discovery Research K-12 project, will involve students and teachers throughout Mississippi and Texas.

The project will train teachers to use modules created through the program for their classrooms and then review students' work to determine how well they learned the material. Further, it will allow researchers to create computer modules on climate change that complement hands-on lessons high school teachers use in their classrooms. The curriculum developed will comply with standards for laboratory-based high school science education and support a better understanding of climate literacy.

The National Science Foundation grant is a partnership between Mississippi State University, the University of Texas, Michigan State University, and TERC, an independent, educational research-based organization.
