Seminar Series: Where is the mathematics of emergence? - November 27, 2007
GeoResources Institute November 7, 2007
What: Seminar Series
When: 1:30pm, November 27, 2007
Where: CAVS Conference Room, Mississippi State University
Dr. Randall Shumaker, Director of the Institute for Simulation and Training (IST) in Orlando Florida,
and Professor of Industrial Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of
Central Florida, will be presenting a seminar titled "Where is the mathematics of emergence?". The seminar
will be held at the CAVS Conference Room at Mississippi State University.
There continues to be a lot of research done, papers delivered, and talks about complex adaptive systems
but progress seems very slow. While some interesting and even useful results have been produced, a
coherent body of knowledge still seems to be eluding us. Is there, or could there even in theory, be
an underlying mathematics of emergent properties yet to be discovered that would allow us to understand
all manner of natural systems, and allow us to build synthetic systems with the robustness seen in
nature? This talk will present some recent results in understanding complex behavior and discuss
application to agent-based systems.
